Welcome to Forgotten Cookery

It is easy to forget that our seemingly so different ancestors lived in the same world as the one we live in. Reading or hearing stories about people from long ago might leave you with a feeling of disconnect – they are just characters in a story; not real people.

This blog was born out of a strong desire to learn how these people experienced life in a way that creates an actual connection with them. Understanding how their experiences have evolved into ours explains a lot about the world we currently live in. You might wonder:

“How is a blog about food going to help me connect to the past?”

The emotions and atmosphere that certain foods can invoke have the ability to teleport you to a completely different location and/or time period. Chances are, you can immediately correctly associate the below image with Medieval Europe. You can almost smell the wine and roast pig!

On this blog, I will frequently post recipes with a historic theme. These recipes are based on actual historic recipes or descriptions. They are accompanied by background information to illustrate the food’s context. My aim is to make these recipes as complete as reasonably possible to limit the use of pre-produced foods. However, a compromise between authenticity and practicality must sometimes be made.
